By Zoila Palma: Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton issued a statement saying that many Belizeans are being pushed closer and closer to the margins of poverty.
“Families are struggling to keep food on the table. Workers are watching their paycheques disappear before the month ends. Small businesses are being crushed by the rising cost of doing business. The cost of living is spiraling, reliable energy remains expensive and uncertain, and fuel prices at the pump continue to punish ordinary Belizeans,” Panton said.
“Yet, in the face of this growing hardship, the Briceño Administration offers no meaningful direct relief, no urgent intervention, and no clear plan to ease the burden on the people. May I remind you that government’s first responsibility is to its citizens. Leadership is not about explaining away suffering; it is about responding to it. The Prime Minister continues to tell Belizeans that inflation is “imported” and that high fuel prices are caused by conflict in the Middle East. These explanations do not mitigate the cost light bills. Excuses do not put food on the table. Blame does not reduce the price at the pump,” Panton added.
The Leader of the Opposition says that other CARICOM leaders have found ways to cushion the blow for their citizens.
“They have introduced targeted relief, reviewed taxes and duties, and taken deliberate steps to protect the most vulnerable. In Belize, however, the Prime Minister and his Cabinet continue to display a troubling disregard for the daily struggles of the very people they were elected to serve,” Panton stated.
Panton says that Belizeans need a government that understands the pressure on working families and is prepared to reduce the burden of fuel taxes, ease the cost of basic goods, support small businesses, and provide real assistance to those who need it most.
