By Breaking Belize News Staff: If Thursday morning feels a little heavy and overcast compared to recent days, that is because the atmosphere over Belize is changing and forecasters say the change is picking up speed as the day progresses.
The Belize National Meteorological Service has issued its morning forecast for Thursday May 28th 2026 warning that conditions will become increasingly moist and unstable as the day moves into afternoon and evening. Forecaster Tareek Matthews is painting a picture of a weather system that starts quiet, builds through the afternoon and spreads across the entire country by tonight.
The morning will bring cloudy skies with isolated showers, the kind of light activity that most Belizeans can work through without much disruption. But that changes significantly this afternoon.
By mid afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected to begin developing over the south and some inland areas. From there the activity does not stay put. According to the forecast, storm activity will increase and spread around the country through the evening and into tonight, meaning that virtually no part of Belize will escape the wet weather by the time night falls.
Temperatures remain stubbornly hot despite the cloud cover. Inland areas are still pushing up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit today, with coastal areas sitting at 88 degrees and the hills offering slight relief at 84 degrees Fahrenheit.
At sea the situation is already demanding attention. A Small Craft Caution has been issued for Belizean coastal waters with winds blowing in from the east southeast at 10 to 20 knots and described as gusty. Waves are running between 4 and 7 feet with moderate to rough sea conditions, particularly beyond the barrier reef. Operators of small crafts are being strongly advised to exercise caution before heading out onto the water today.
Today’s high tide came in at 7:37 this morning with a low tide at 3:02 this afternoon and another high at 9:13 this evening.
Looking ahead to Friday the outlook is not much brighter. Skies will remain mostly cloudy to overcast with a few showers, thunderstorms and periods of rain likely around the country. Coastal areas can expect slightly more activity Friday night.
