By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police in Corozal are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of thirty-five-year-old Roger Escalante and left well-known Corozal DJ Ezer Alcoser hospitalized on Tuesday night.
According to police, the incident occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. outside El Patio Restaurant on Flamboyant Street in Corozal Town. Investigators say Escalante and twenty-five-year-old Alcoser had just arrived at the location in a grey Toyota Hilux when they were approached by armed men who immediately opened fire.
Escalante reportedly attempted to escape the gunfire by running behind a nearby house, but his body was later discovered motionless on top of a cement septic tank behind the restaurant. Alcoser sustained gunshot injuries and remains hospitalized in stable condition.
During Wednesday’s police press briefing, ASP Stacy Smith confirmed that investigators believe the shooting was drug-related. Smith also revealed that Escalante had been identified as a person of interest in an ongoing drug investigation connected to the well-publicized Neuland plane landing case.
Police processed the scene and recovered several expended nine-millimeter shells as investigations continue.
