By Zoila Palma: The United Kingdom could experience another heatwave as July begins, despite temperatures easing from the record-breaking highs recorded last week.
Forecasts suggest temperatures may climb back into the low to mid-30 degrees Celsius across parts of England and Wales next week, although forecasters say there remains uncertainty over how intense the heat could become, BBC reports.
The UK Met Office said a return to heatwave conditions is becoming increasingly likely in some areas, but the chances of seeing the extreme temperatures and humidity experienced last week remain low.
Last Friday, a provisional UK June temperature record of 37.7 degrees Celsius was set in Lingwood, Norfolk, surpassing the previous June record of 35.6 degrees set in 1957 and matched in 1976.
Weather experts have also warned that above-average temperatures are expected throughout July and August, with an increased likelihood of heatwaves and heat-related impacts across the UK and Europe.
High pressure is forecast to build over western Europe later this week, bringing warmer conditions that could spread across England and Wales and potentially meet the official criteria for a heatwave.
Meanwhile, much of Europe continues to grapple with extreme heat. National temperature records were broken in at least ten European countries over the past week, including the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Denmark.
The World Health Organization has linked more than 1,300 excess deaths since June 21 to the recent heatwave, with around 1,000 reported in France alone.
Red extreme heat warnings remain in effect across several eastern European countries.
