International News: Cuba says talks with U.S. at standstill, announces U.N. debate on Oil Embargo

By Zoila Palma:  Today, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said that talks between Cuba and the United States have reached a standstill, despite Cuba recently approving a series of free-market reforms.

Rodríguez stressed that the reforms were never discussed during previous meetings with U.S. officials, describing them as matters of Cuba’s “total and absolute sovereignty” and saying the government is not interested in Washington’s opinion on the measures, AP reports.

Rodríguez said the reforms were instead followed by a new package of U.S. sanctions targeting Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, other government officials, and companies considered vital to the island’s struggling economy.

The reforms, approved by Cuba’s Communist Party and National Assembly, include expanding opportunities for private businesses, allowing the free hiring of personnel, and authorizing private banks and investment by Cubans living abroad.

While Rodríguez described previous discussions with U.S. officials as generally respectful, he accused Washington of continuing to make aggressive statements against Cuba, threatening military action, and imposing additional coercive measures. The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

During the same press conference, Rodríguez announced that the United Nations General Assembly will hold a debate on July 7 on the U.S. oil embargo imposed in late January.
