By Zoila Palma:  On October 29, 2026, the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Economic Transformation, participated in the regional workshops on the 2026–2027 El Niño phenomenon, held under the Regional Action Plan promoted by the General Secretariat of the Central American Integration System (SG-SICA), CEPREDENAC and the Regional Committee for Hydraulic Resources (CRRH), in collaboration with COSEFIN and with support from the World Bank.

The workshops brought together representatives from Ministries of Finance and Economy, regional institutions and development partners to discuss the potential impacts of El Niño, including drought, water shortages, agricultural losses, and the resulting pressures on economic activity and public finances.

Through the leadership of Dr. Osmond Martinez, Minister of Economic Transformation and Pro Tempore President of COSEFIN, Minister Martinez highlighted the importance of taking a coordinated and forward-looking approach to the potential impacts of El Niño, emphasizing that:

“Preparing for climate-related events requires us to look beyond the immediate impacts and consider the wider implications for our economies and public finances. By working together, sharing knowledge and strengthening our financial preparedness, we can better protect our communities, support vulnerable sectors and build resilience across the region,” Martinez said.

The Ministry noted that through its COSEFIN Pro Tempore Presidency, Belize remains committed to strengthening regional cooperation, promoting knowledge-sharing and advancing practical solutions to improve fiscal preparedness and resilience against climate-related risks.
