By Zoila Palma: A close ally of Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro is blaming ChatGPT for language in a now-deleted social media letter in which the right-wing politician described himself as Brazil’s rightful “president-elect.”
The explanation came after Bolsonaro sparked controversy by questioning the legitimacy of the country’s recent presidential election, despite losing to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by more than four million votes.
Bolsonaro initially shared the letter on Wednesday, alleging without evidence that the election had been marred by fraud and presenting himself as the country’s legitimate president-elect.
About an hour later, he deleted the document and posted a revised version, replacing the phrase “president-elect” with “leader of Brazil,” prompting speculation about the sudden change, Reuters report.
Paulo Figueiredo, a right-wing influencer and podcast host who serves as an unofficial spokesperson for the Bolsonaro family in the United States, said the wording was mistakenly included during the document’s preparation.
According to Figueiredo, Eduardo Bolsonaro, Flavio’s younger brother and a former congressman, had used ChatGPT to help finalize the letter. He claimed the chatbot incorporated an earlier draft containing the disputed wording, along with an outdated version of Brazil’s coat of arms.
Figueiredo said the errors were only noticed after the document had been distributed to journalists and described the revision as minor.
He maintained, however, that the senator’s position had not changed and that Bolsonaro continued to reject the election result.
