By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two Belize City brothers accused of threatening a man and his mother with firearms have walked free after both complainants appeared in court and requested that the charges against them be withdrawn.
Lyndon and Jayden Romero were released on Wednesday, October 28, after spending two nights on remand at the Belize Central Prison.
The brothers had been arraigned before the Chief Magistrate on Tuesday, October 27, on two counts each of aggravated assault with a firearm upon a man and his mother. Both pleaded not guilty.
According to police reports, the allegations stemmed from an incident on October 18, when the man and his mother heard a commotion outside their home on Estrella Metzgen Street in Belize City.
The complainant reported that when they went outside, they observed the Romero brothers allegedly holding firearms while arguing with his younger brother, who was seated inside a vehicle.
As the man approached, the brothers allegedly pointed their weapons toward him and his mother and threatened to shoot them.
Fearing for their lives, the man reportedly retreated into his home and contacted police. The brothers allegedly fled in a black Nissan Rogue toward Mahogany Street.
Police subsequently launched an investigation and issued wanted notices. Breaking Belize News reported on October 19 that Lyndon Romero Jr. was wanted for questioning.
On October 26, attorney Ian Grey reportedly informed police that the brothers would surrender themselves. They were subsequently charged and remanded.
However, when they returned to the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, both the complainant and his mother took the stand and indicated that they no longer wished to pursue the matter.
The two aggravated assault counts against each brother were subsequently withdrawn, resulting in their release from custody.
