By Breaking Belize News Staff: Just months after successfully overturning a burglary conviction on appeal, well-known Belize City figure Denfield Lemmott is back behind bars after being accused of burglarizing the YMCA building and stealing cash from two women.

Lemmott appeared unrepresented before a magistrate in Court #3 on Monday evening, where he was arraigned on two counts of burglary.

Police allege that on March 27, 2026, Lemmott entered offices inside the YMCA building at the corner of Freetown Road and St. Thomas Street and stole cash belonging to a program officer and a teacher.

According to the charges, the program officer lost a total of $130 in cash, while the teacher reported that $350 was stolen from her purse.

Although Lemmott pleaded not guilty, he told the court that the virtual complainants only wanted their money returned and claimed he was prepared to repay them. He also maintained that he did not personally steal the money but admitted he was with the man who allegedly committed the offenses.

Police prosecutors strongly objected to bail, arguing that Lemmott was already out on bail for a similar burglary matter and had been ordered not to reoffend while on bail.

The magistrate agreed with the prosecution and denied bail, remanding Lemmott to the Belize Central Prison until June 29, 2026.

According to police, officers responded to reports of a burglary at the YMCA building around 11:30 p.m. on March 27. Investigators say the program officer reported securing her office earlier that afternoon, only to later discover that her office and locker had been opened and cash stolen from her purse.

Further checks reportedly revealed that another office had also been targeted, with the teacher discovering that money had been stolen from her purse as well.

Police say surveillance footage was reviewed and statements were recorded from witnesses, leading investigators to positively identify Lemmott as the suspect. An all-points bulletin was later issued for his detention, and he was taken into custody on May 9, 2026.

In May 2025, Lemmott had been convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison for burglary. However, that conviction was later overturned on appeal by Justice Candace Nanton, resulting in his release.
