Belize takes a step toward child-centred justice

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize is moving to ensure that its youngest and most vulnerable are treated with fairness and care, as partners from across the country gathered in June for the Validation Workshop on the National Child Justice Guidelines

The gathering marked an important milestone in the effort to build a justice system rooted in children’s rights and their best interests. It drew stakeholders from the justice, protection, and social sectors, all united by a common goal, putting children at the heart of how decisions are made and services are delivered.

UNICEF Representative for Belize, Sajid Ali, set the tone in his opening remarks, emphasising that a strong child justice system relies on collaboration and clear standards. He called for greater coordination across sectors to make sure that children who need help, particularly those in contact with or in conflict with the law, receive responses that are timely, appropriate, and sensitive to their needs. He stressed that the true measure of a child justice system is how well institutions work together to protect children, uphold their rights, and support their growth.

The guidelines are built on an understanding that children who encounter the law often carry heavy burdens, from exposure to violence and trauma to the pain of family separation. Meeting those challenges, officials say, means connecting the justice and child protection systems so that children are not left to fall through the cracks.

At its core, the workshop reinforced that child justice goes beyond courtrooms and legal procedures. It is about treating every child with dignity, shielding them from harm, and guiding them toward brighter futures through rehabilitation and reintegration.

For Belize, the validation of the guidelines is not simply the end of a paperwork process, but the start of stronger, more coordinated action. The aim is a system that works for every child, one that is fair, responsive, and centred on their well-being. Through ongoing partnership, the country is taking real strides toward giving all children the chance to heal, grow, and thrive.
