By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Belize Bus Association is calling on the government to include its members in the next phase of Belize’s electric bus pilot project, arguing that independent operators must be given the same opportunity to test and evaluate the new technology firsthand.
In a letter dated May 27 and addressed to Minister of Transportation Dr. Louis Zabaneh, the association expressed support for the modernization of Belize’s public transportation sector and the shift toward cleaner and more sustainable transport solutions. However, the BBA says the transition must be inclusive and practical for operators across the country.
According to the association, electric buses currently operating under the pilot program have only been assigned to Belize City and western corridor routes linked to the National Bus Company structure. The BBA says none of its members have yet been allowed to directly operate the buses.
The association argues that reviewing reports and presentations alone is not enough for operators to understand the realities of electric bus operations, including charging systems, maintenance needs, passenger loads, route suitability and long-term operating costs.
BBA President Philip Jones says the organization is not asking for special treatment, but rather equal participation in a national transportation transition that will directly affect the future of the industry.
