Twenty five million dollars later and Belize’s beaches are still drowning in sargassum with no end in sight

By Breaking Belize News Staff:  Belize is still struggling to win the battle against sargassum, even as millions of dollars continue being spent every year to manage the growing coastal crisis.

Minister of Blue Economy Andre Perez says there is still no clear solution to stop the massive seaweed invasion from reaching Belize’s beaches and affecting tourism communities.

Perez says the real challenge is collecting sargassum while it is still at sea, before it reaches the shoreline and begins to rot. He noted that while many people and companies have proposed different uses for sargassum, no one has yet produced a proven solution that works at scale.

The minister confirmed that $25 million has already been invested in San Pedro for beach cleanup, while communities such as Hopkins, Caye Caulker, Seine Bight and Placencia can access monthly support through the Belize Tourism Board.

Despite that, the sargassum keeps coming, and officials warn the season could worsen.
