Tropic Air CEO warns moving San Pedro airport north could hurt businesses across Ambergris Caye

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Tropic Air CEO Max Greif is warning that the Government’s proposal to relocate San Pedro’s domestic airport to northern Ambergris Caye could have serious economic consequences for businesses and residents across the island.

Speaking during an interview with 7News, Greif argued that San Pedro’s economy and tourism infrastructure have developed around the existing airport for more than seven decades.

He said moving the airport to a location he described as two hours north would disrupt the way the island operates, potentially affecting hotels, restaurants, shops and other businesses that depend on convenient access for visitors.

Greif emphasized that his concerns extend beyond Tropic Air’s business interests.

“Tropic, you know, will survive, we’ll be fine, but our concern is what is the impact on the island?” he stated.

He specifically questioned how the relocation could affect small businesses along Front Street and Middle Street in San Pedro.

Greif also highlighted the airport’s historical significance, recalling that his grandfather helped establish the original runway during the 1950s.

The airport is named after his grandfather, Belizean aviation pioneer John Greif II.

Despite the proposed changes, Greif maintained that Tropic Air remains financially strong and capable of continuing operations.

He said his primary concerns include the company’s 270 employees and the wider economic impact on Ambergris Caye.
