Burkina Faso turns prisoners into farmers: Should Belize adopt a similar programme?

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Burkina Faso is drawing attention for an approach to criminal justice that puts eligible offenders to work in agriculture rather than keeping them behind prison walls.

According to a report attributed to Farm Gear, the West African country’s parliament revised its community service legislation on October 14, 2026, expanding opportunities for certain offenders to perform community work instead of serving traditional prison sentences.

Under the reported changes, eligible offenders who pose no danger to society and have compensated their victims may be sentenced to community work.

One example is the Baporo agricultural prison, established in 1984 under former President Thomas Sankara.

At the facility, inmates reportedly cultivate maize, rice, sorghum, soybeans, cowpeas and sesame while learning agricultural techniques that could help them secure employment after release.

The report states that the facility produced approximately 240 tonnes of food in 2025, with plans to expand production in 2026.

The initiative raises an interesting question for Belize, where agriculture remains an important economic sector and rehabilitation is a key concern within the criminal justice system.

Could a similar programme allow eligible nonviolent offenders to learn farming skills, produce food and contribute to society while serving their sentences?

Such an approach would require proper supervision, safeguards against forced labour and protections for victims and participating prisoners.

Should the Government of Belize introduce a programme that allows eligible prisoners to work on farms, learn agricultural skills and help produce food for the country?
