By Zoila Palma:  Today, residents and taxi operators in Melchor de Mencos, Peten are protesting and have blocked the access to and from the Manuel Baldizon bridge connecting Melchor de Mencos to the Belize border.

Taxi operators warned during a live video that only students leaving Melchor to study in Belize are allowed to access the bridge.

The closure of the Manuel Baldizon bridge is significant since tourists entering and leaving Belize will be unable to access Melchor or to cross back into Belize today due to the protests.

According to reports, the taxi operators are protesting due to an obligatory insurance that they claim is being charged and they say it is an additional tax that they are being forced to pay.

Belizeans are advised that the bridge in Melchor is closed due to the protest.
