By Zoila Palma: Football fans in Belize and around the world celebrated this morning as Argentina captain Lionel Messi became the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history.
Messi broke the record during Argentina’s Group J match against Austria, scoring his 17th World Cup goal to surpass the previous mark and cement his place in football history.
The historic moment came in the 38th minute at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, when Messi swept home Argentina’s opening goal to the delight of thousands of supporters.
The goal moved him past former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, whose record of 16 World Cup goals had stood for years. Messi had equaled that mark with a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening match of the tournament.
Now playing in his sixth World Cup, Messi has scored 17 goals across six tournaments and leads the current competition with four goals.
The 38-year-old missed a penalty earlier in the match against Austria but quickly recovered to write another chapter in his remarkable international career. He has now scored 121 goals in 201 appearances for Argentina and is only the third player to score in six successive World Cups for his country.
Messi’s latest achievement further strengthens Argentina’s hopes of defending its World Cup crown.
