By Zoila Palma: Argentina captain Lionel Messi made history today by becoming the men’s World Cup all-time leading scorer, netting his 17th career World Cup goal during Argentina’s match against Austria.
The milestone goal came in the 38th minute when the global football superstar finished a left-footed one-timer from a pass by Facundo Medina.
The goal moved Messi ahead of former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who previously held the record with 16 World Cup goals. Messi had equaled the mark after scoring a hat trick in Argentina’s tournament opener against Algeria. He nearly broke the record earlier against Austria but missed a penalty kick in the ninth minute.
Messi, who turns 39 this week, began his World Cup journey in 2006 and has now scored in six different tournaments. After netting four goals in the 2014 World Cup and seven during Argentina’s title-winning campaign in Qatar in 2022, he entered this tournament with 13 World Cup goals before adding four more in the current competition.
The record adds to an already remarkable career for the Argentine star.
Messi is also the first player to appear in six World Cups and has won eight Ballon d’Or awards. He helped Argentina win the World Cup in 2022 and guided the nation to Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, further cementing his legacy as one of football’s greatest players.
