NTUCB backs call for urgent audit in Mira contract controversy

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) has thrown its support behind calls for an audit of the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security, following allegations surrounding Minister of Home Affairs Oscar Mira and government contracts awarded to members of his family.

The controversy surfaced earlier this month after leaked SmartStream payment records reportedly revealed that more than one million dollars in contracts for the supply of vegetables were awarded to Mira’s brother and sister. According to the records, the contracts were granted during Mira’s time as Minister of State within the ministry.

NTUCB President Ella Waight has described the revelations as cause for serious concern. She is calling for an audit to be conducted urgently to determine whether public funds were managed appropriately.

The allegations have not been proven, and the proposed audit is intended to establish the facts surrounding how the contracts were awarded and whether proper procedures were followed.

As public attention on the matter grows, the NTUCB’s backing adds further weight to demands for greater transparency and accountability in the handling of government contracts.
