The battle for the Twin Towns: Briceño wants to turn San Ignacio/Santa Elena blue

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): With municipal elections less than a year away, Prime Minister John Briceño says he is determined to flip San Ignacio and Santa Elena, the one municipality that has resisted his party’s recent dominance.

Both major political parties are already manoeuvring to position themselves ahead of the polls. And while a “blue wave” has carried the People’s United Party (PUP) to sweeping national victories in the last two elections, the Twin Towns have remained loyal to Mayor Earl Trapp and the United Democratic Party (UDP).

The Prime Minister, however, says he is confident the constituency can be turned, adding that his team on the ground is working hard to make it happen.

San Ignacio/Santa Elena has been a stubborn holdout for the UDP.

In the 2024 municipal elections, it was the only municipality in the country the UDP managed to win, with Trapp securing a fourth consecutive term as mayor. The PUP, by contrast, swept the vast majority of council seats nationwide.

Whether the PUP can finally break through in the Twin Towns will be one of the storylines to watch as the municipal elections approach.
