By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize joined the rest of the world today in observing World Refugee Day, an annual international observance led by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) that draws attention to the millions of people displaced by war, violence, and persecution, and celebrates their strength as they rebuild their lives.
This year’s theme, “Until Everyone is safe,” carries a powerful message: that safety is indivisible.
As officials noted, a community cannot be truly secure when individuals are forced to flee and are denied protection, dignity, and the chance to rebuild their lives.
UNHCR Officer-in-Charge for Belize, Mariya Voloshkevich, said the day is a time to honour the courage, resilience, and achievements of refugees around the world. She noted that this month, UNHCR, together with the Refugees Department and Humana People to People, is hosting a series of activities, including sports events for children, awareness campaigns, and community gatherings, to thank Belizean communities for their solidarity and support for those forced to flee.
“When we stand with the most vulnerable, we create systems of protection that safeguard us all,” she said.
Nikolai Zelaya, Director of the Refugees Department, said every refugee carries a remarkable story of resilience, courage and hope, and that Belize bears a responsibility to uphold the principles of dignity, protection and compassion for those who seek refuge. He reaffirmed the country’s commitment to ensuring that those in need of protection are treated with fairness, respect and humanity.
The Refugees Department, which falls under the Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour, said it remains committed to fulfilling its mandate in line with national laws and international obligations, while promoting understanding, inclusion and respect for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.
