By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association (PSCPA), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other agencies, officially launched a project on June 18, 2026, to establish a bio factory in San Roman Rio Hondo, Orange Walk District.
The initiative aims to produce eco-friendly fertilizers to improve soil health, strengthen climate resilience, and reduce dependence on costly imported fertilizers.
Prime Minister John Briceño welcomed the project, stating, “We are investing in the future of Belizean agriculture. This bio-factory represents innovation, resilience, and our commitment to giving our sugarcane farmers the tools they need to restore soil health, improve productivity, and strengthen their livelihoods. Together, we are growing a more sustainable and prosperous Belize.”
Speaking at the launch ceremony on the San Luis Road, PSCPA Program Director Ginnel Ozaeta said the project was designed to help farmers remain productive and profitable despite growing challenges facing the sugar industry. “At it’s core this project is about one thing, helping our farmers remain productive, profitable and resilient in changing agricultural landscapes,” Ozaeta said.
Briceño said the sugar industry remains a vital part of life in northern Belize and stressed the need for innovation to address current challenges. “Well we know that our Cane farmers have been going through a very difficult time but for us in Belize in the north it is more than just an industry it is a way of life, it is cultural and it is important for us to be able to find innovative ways to help our farmers and our farmers have to innovate. They have to change,” he said.
Addressing the issue of competitiveness, Briceño said rising costs have made it increasingly difficult for cane farmers to remain profitable, prompting some to leave the industry. “Because the costs continue to go up you know it makes it almost impossible for a cane farmer to be able to be profitable,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the bio-factory project would provide a more affordable and efficient option for farmers while boosting productivity. “Once this starts to work and we expect it to be successful and we can then convince other industries and say, look, we can increase productivity,” Briceño said.
