By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 23-year-old Belize City man who brazenly attempted to sell a contractor his own stolen flashlight has been fined after pleading guilty to handling stolen goods.
Randolph Gibson, a warehouse assistant of Nurse Findley Crescent in the Kings Park area, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Neeshad Mohammed in Court #6, where he was read a single charge of handling stolen goods. He pleaded guilty and asked the court for leniency, requesting a fine instead of prison time.
The court imposed a non-custodial sentence, fining Gibson $150 plus $5 cost of court, which he must pay by June 4, 2026. In default, he will serve one month in prison.
The charge stemmed from an incident on Monday, April 27, when contractor Jason Edwardo Flores reported that a man had approached him at his construction site on Dungeon Drive asking for a job. After being told there were no vacancies, the man left, only to return about 10 minutes later offering to sell a green Total brand flashlight for $50.
Flores immediately recognized the flashlight as his own, noting its distinctive yellow Ingco rechargeable battery. He then contacted an employee, who confirmed that the item was missing from the worksite.
Pretending to be interested, Flores told the man to wait while he contacted a buyer. Instead, he secured the area and alerted police. Officers later arrived, and Gibson was detained and charged.
Investigations revealed there was insufficient evidence to charge Gibson with theft, but he was prosecuted for handling stolen goods, as he was found in possession of the stolen item and attempting to sell it.
The court also heard that Gibson is currently out on bail for an unrelated charge of robbery with a firearm, which remains before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court awaiting trial.
