Mira commends police as Elmer Nah gets three life sentences for Ramnarace murders

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Minister of Home Affairs and Belmopan Area Representative Oscar Mira says justice has finally been served in the case that shook the nation’s capital, following the sentencing of former police corporal Elmer Nah for the 2022 New Year’s Eve massacre of the Ramnarace family.

Nah was handed three concurrent life sentences on Friday for the murders of Jon Ramnarace, his brother David Ramnarace, and Jon’s wife Vivian Ramnarace.

Justice Nigel Pilgrim ruled that he must serve at least 50 years before he becomes eligible for parole.

Speaking to the media on Friday afternoon, Mira said the case was one the entire country had been following, and he used the moment to commend the Police Department.

“It is one of those cases that we have been following. In fact, the whole country has been following. I think that justice has been served,” Mira said.

“I believe that I must commend the Police Department for a very good investigation.

“The Minister said the conviction and sentence are proof that proper police work delivers results.

“When an investigation is done properly, when the prosecution is done properly, then we get convictions. And that is what we, as a Police Department, along with the other stakeholders, are doing,” he said.

Mira acknowledged that no verdict can undo what the family has lost.

“It gives us closure. It does not bring us our loved ones back. But it does give us closure. It does give us justice,” he said.

He added that police will press on with the many cases still before them.

“We are going to do everything possible to continue those investigations that are open right now, to make sure that we have arrests and that we have prosecution, proper prosecution, and eventually get a conviction,” the Minister said.

Nah was convicted on May 29 after a High Court trial.

The shooting took place on December 31, 2022 at the Ramnarace family home in Belmopan, a short walk from Nah’s own residence on Masam Street.

Brothers Jon and David were killed at the scene, while Vivian died from her injuries just over two weeks later.

A fourth victim, Yenie Alberto, survived after being shot in the abdomen.

In pushing for the maximum penalty, prosecutors pointed to several aggravating factors, including that three people were killed inside their own home, in front of a child, in what the evidence showed was a planned attack.
