Ladyville retiree in court for traffic mishap

By Aaron Humes: 74-year-old senior citizen Austin Gabourel of Ladyville, Belize District, was in court on Friday following a traffic mishap in front of the Shell gas station in Ladyville.

Gabourel was charged with driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention, failing to produce a driver’s license, and failing to give way when changing directions. On Sunday, February 4, on the Phillip Goldson Highway, between Miles 9 and 10 in Ladyville Village, being the driver of a blue Chevrolet Silverado, he failed to give way to a grey 2016 Chevy Truck driven by Linsford Pattico of Burrell Boom Village, Belize District. Gabourel drove his vehicle across the Highway to the Shell Gas Station and it apparently collided with the rear portion of Pattico’s vehicle, causing damages to its driver’s side and bumper area.

In court, the former recycling company owner initially pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention. Gabourel pleaded not guilty, however, to the license charge, saying his license was in Dangriga but he did not physically have it after his documents were burned in a previous traffic accident. The third charge was dropped due to not being properly cited in the law.

The Magistrate entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on the first charge and released him on bail of $400 and surety. He returns to court on April 4.
