By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said today that widespread power outages continue to affect Mexico due to unseasonably high temperatures.

Concerns are mounting over the stability of the country’s energy supply, further exacerbated by recent power disruptions in neighboring Belize.

The state-owned electricity company, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), finds itself under scrutiny as both nations navigate through energy crises, highlighting the fragility of the region’s power infrastructure.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador attributed the recent power outages in his country to unseasonably hot weather, stressing that such circumstances were unforeseen.

Despite assurances of the national grid’s capacity, the outages affected approximately 20 out of 32 states.

The situation, occurring amidst a net national power demand just shy of the net generation, underscores the challenges faced by Mexico’s energy sector.

President Lopez Obrador announced plans for cooperation with private power producers, who contribute substantially to Mexico’s electricity generation.

This move aims to bolster the country’s energy resilience and mitigate future emergencies.

COPARMEX, a prominent Mexican employers’ lobby, advocates for increased private investment, especially in renewable energy, to enhance the grid’s reliability and prevent similar crises.

Meanwhile, across the border in Belize, residents are grappling with their own energy crisis.

Belize recently experienced significant power outages, raising concerns about the reliability of its energy infrastructure.

The outages have prompted discussions on the need for investment and modernization of Belize’s power systems to ensure uninterrupted access to electricity for its citizens.

The concurrent energy challenges facing Mexico and Belize underscore the interconnected nature of the region’s power grids and the importance of robust infrastructure.

Addressing these issues is crucial not only for ensuring energy security but also for driving sustainable development and resilience in the face of future challenges.
