International News: Heat wave in Mexico prompts unprecedented power outages, President says

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said today that widespread power outages continue to affect Mexico due to unseasonably high temperatures.

Despite the disruptions, the president assured the public of the grid’s capacity and pledged collaboration with private power producers who contribute to half of Mexico’s electricity generation.

Twenty of Mexico’s 32 states were affected by the rolling power outages.

The outages coincided with a national net power demand of 44.9 gigawatts, slightly below the net generation of 45.0 GW.

COPARMEX, a significant Mexican employers’ group, advocated for increased private investment, particularly in renewable energy, to enhance grid reliability and avert future emergencies.

Lopez Obrador’s administration has favored state-owned electricity company CFE over privately-owned generators in the past six years, potentially hindering renewable energy projects.

The outages compounded existing challenges, including severe water shortages in parts of Mexico.

Due to Mexico’s energy situation, CFE is curtailing supply to Belize resulting in power outages and load shedding in Belize.
