Hadie Goldson, first female Belizean to qualify as attorney, passes away

By Aaron Humes: Organ of the United Democratic Party (UDP), The Guardian, has announced the passing of Hadie Goldson, wife of senior statesman, the late Philip Goldson.

According to the Guardian, Hadie Goldson passed away at the Octavia Waight Home in San Ignacio Town earlier this week.

The Goldsons married on the date of the first general election held in British Honduras under universal adult suffrage, on April 28, 1954 (he was elected a member of the Legislative Assembly for the Belize South constituency).

In 1961, shortly before Hurricane Hattie, Hadie Goldson traveled to London to study law and returned qualified, the first Belizean woman to do so, in 1965. She worked here for some years before leaving for New York City in 1972, about the time her husband went to study law in London as well. She remained in the U.S. for some time working as a legal clerk and raising the couple’s five children, while Philip Goldson continued his political career here. After Philip Goldson retired in the mid-1990s they lived together until his passing in 2001; she outlived him by more than two decades.
