By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Current Vice President Jaheed Smith and athlete Cojac Smith will be competing for the post of  president of Belize Athletic Association (BAA) at a Special General Assembly (SGA) to be held on Saturday, February 17

On Tuesday, January 23, the BAA announced the SGA to elect a number of members to the Executive Committee for Saturday, February 10, 2024, but on Friday, February 2, the BAA made another announcement, through a press release, delaying the SGA until February 17, 2024. The SGA is to be held at 10:00 am, at the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA) building at Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City.

The elections will focus on voting for a new President, Vice President, General Secretary, Treasurer, and one Committee member spot.

“In the spirit of transparency and fairness, the Association accepted nominations for these positions that were submitted by January 26, 2024” the BAA said in its press release..

“To maintain the integrity of the electoral process, only members in good standing as of January 26, 2024, will be eligible to cast their votes during the Special General Assembly. This ensures a democratic and inclusive approach to the Association’s leadership selection.”

Initially, the elections were to have been only for a new President, General Secretary, and Treasurer, following the resignation last year of BAA President Deon Sutherland and Treasurer Orville Melendrez and the death of General Secretary Harry Pilgrim, but since Vice President Smith and Committee Member Alvin Tillett are vying for the posts of President and General Secretary, respectively, their posts become vacant. Smith and Tillett are expected to resign, if they haven’t already, by February 16, to be able to participate in the election process.

Members of the BAA expressed dissent earlier saying they had not been given ample time for nominations, but five people were able to get their names in.

Apart from the two Smiths vying for President, Kimberly Casimiro and Alvin Tillett have been nominated for General Secretary and Mark Anderson for Treasurer.

Sutherland, Melendrez, and Pilgrim were elected to the BAA Executive Committee in April 2022 along with 1st Vice President – Jaheed Smith, 2nd Vice President – Tricia Flores, Assistant Secretary – Tiffara Jones, Public Relations Officer – Ashantie Carr, and Committee Members – Andrew Pilgrim, Shelmadine Carr, Alvin Tillett.
