By Zoila Palma: Mexico and the United States have pledged to continue bilateral security cooperation based on mutual respect following a meeting between Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin in Mexico City on Thursday, AP reports.
Mullin arrived in the Mexican capital for a two-day visit amid recent tensions between the two countries surrounding the deaths of two CIA agents near Mexico’s northern border and U.S. drug trafficking indictments against 10 Mexican officials.
Following the meeting at the presidential palace, Sheinbaum said both nations agreed to maintain cooperation rooted in mutual respect.
Mexico’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that cooperation would be guided by respect for sovereignty and “coordination without subordination.” Mullin, who assumed the Homeland Security post in March following Kristi Noem’s departure, also met with Mexico’s Security Cabinet during the visit.
Earlier Thursday, Sheinbaum said she intended to raise concerns over the deaths of 15 Mexican migrants in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers since 2025.
The deaths prompted diplomatic protests from Mexico, which has instructed its consulates to conduct daily visits to detention centers and announced plans in March to take the cases before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
The Foreign Ministry also highlighted migration cooperation, noting that crossings by Mexican citizens have dropped to a 50-year low.
Sheinbaum ruled out discussing the cases of the 10 Mexican officials indicted in the United States.
Bilateral tensions have also been heightened by the April 19 deaths of two CIA agents and two Chihuahua Attorney General’s Office officials after their vehicle plunged into a ravine between Chihuahua and Sinaloa, where a clandestine synthetic drug lab had been dismantled. Mexico formally protested to Washington, saying it had not been informed of the presence or activities of the U.S. agents in the country.
