By Zoila Palma: On May 22, 2026, Mayor Earl Trapp and the San Ignacio /Santa Elena town council and Minister Orlando Habet welcomed the National Garifuna Council to San Ignacio and Santa Elena.
For the first time, the National Garifuna Council has brought their 40th Annual Garifuna Convention to the Twin Towns.
“We embrace, support and celebrate their culture, history, language and unity forward. A declaration that the Garifuna people are alive, thriving and are marching boldly into the future without losing sight of the sacred roots that gave us life. Congratulations!,” Mayor Trapp said.
“Also, I would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to CET tonight at 9pm for the after party with Mime Martinez and other Artists in party on the parking lot,” Mayor Trapp added.
The National Garifuna Council’s 40th Annual Garifuna Convention commenced on May 22 and goes through to May 24, 2026 at Cayo CET.
“Come and be part of meaningful discussions, cultural celebrations, networking, and the continued strengthening of our Garifuna heritage and community. Let us gather in the spirit of unity, pride, and service as we honor our past and shape our future together,” the NGC said.
