International News: Cuba suffers 2nd nationwide blackout in a week as power crisis deepens

By Zoila Palma:  Cuba was plunged into another islandwide blackout on Friday, marking the second nationwide power outage in less than a week as the country struggles with a deteriorating electricity grid and severe fuel shortages. The outage affected nearly 10 million people, with Cuba’s Electric Union confirming the collapse of the national power system, AP reports.

Authorities said the blackout was triggered by a fluctuation in the electrical system following the failure of a transmission line linking the provinces of Santa Clara and Sancti Spíritus.

Prime Minister Manuel Marrero described it as another difficult week for Cuba, citing the impact of the U.S. energy blockade, a lack of fuel to operate power plants, and several generating units being out of service.

Many of Cuba’s power stations are more than 30 years old and have suffered from years of limited maintenance and chronic fuel shortages.

Friday’s outage was the fourth nationwide or major blackout this year, following similar incidents in March, May, and earlier this week.

Cuba has faced worsening fuel shortages since January after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on countries supplying oil to the island.
