Government wants lie detector tests for National Security Council personnel

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Those with access to Belize’s most sensitive security information could soon be required to sit polygraph tests and undergo vetting.

The proposal is part of an amendment to the National Security Council Act, which was taken up in the Senate on Thursday.

Making the case for the change, Leader for Government Business Anthony Sylvestre pointed to the classified material that passes through the council and its secretariat. He argued that anyone with that level of access should face periodic testing and close scrutiny.

“It behooves everyone that the personnel who are engaged, employed in this body, which has such sensitive and classified information within the access of the personnel within the secretariat of the National Security Council, it is important that those persons would be at different points in time, be subject to polygraph tests and a level of rigid scrutiny,” Sylvestre told the Senate.

The council plays a central role in shaping Belize’s security decisions. In recent weeks, it has dealt with the Guatemalan military aircraft incursion into Belizean airspace and preliminary talks with the United States on security cooperation.

The opposition supported the idea of screening but raised questions about how the results would be handled.
