Belize exploring possibility of railway linking Mexico to Belize City

By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño said recently that the Government of Belize is exploring plans to extend Mexico’s Tren Maya railway into Belize, with a proposed 160-kilometer route linking the Mexican border to Belize City and potentially continuing to Guatemala.

Briceño said a feasibility study being conducted with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is expected to be completed in approximately two weeks.

The study is expected to assess the infrastructure requirements, financial resources and potential funding options for the project.

The PM acknowledged that constructing a railway of this scale would require a significant investment, with private investors also being considered as possible partners.

Briceño said the proposed railway could create opportunities for tourism, regional travel and trade, particularly if connected to plans for a modern port in Belize.

“There are a lot of opportunities with the connection of Tren Maya,” the PM said.

“If we can get Tren Maya to come into Belize and then connect Belize City and then connect onto Guatemala, it opens up not only from the tourism industry but also using the port facilities,” he added.
