By Zoila Palma: Regional leaders are renewing calls for greater self-sufficiency in food production, as CARICOM advances its target of reducing the region’s food import bill by 25 percent.
At the NATS 2026 opening on April 30, 2026, Minister of Agriculture, Guyana & Chairman of the CARICOM Ministerial Task Force Zulfikar Mustapha described the initiative as transformative. “Through the CARICOM food security agenda, we have committed ourselves to a bold and transformative vision—to reduce the region’s food import bill by 25 percent,” he said.
Despite ongoing challenges, Mustapha expressed confidence in achieving the target. “This vision is ambitious, but it is achievable,” he stated.
He also pointed to existing pressures on the agricultural sector. “We are confronted by a convergence of challenges—climate variability, rising input costs, global supply chain disruptions, and increasing competition in international markets,” Mustapha noted.
This is a regional strategy aimed at strengthening resilience and reducing dependence on external food sources.
