By Zoila Palma:  The future of Caribbean agriculture depends heavily on youth engagement, innovation, and climate resilience, according to regional leaders gathered in Belize.

During his address at the opening ceremony of the National Agriculture and Trade Show 2026, Minister of Agriculture, Guyana & Chairman of the CARICOM Ministerial Task Force Zulfikar Mustapha emphasized the need to modernize the sector to attract younger generations. “We must reposition agriculture as a modern, profitable, and rewarding career path,” he said.

He highlighted the growing role of technology in shaping the industry.

“Technology is reshaping agriculture—from precision farming to data-driven decision-making—and it is making the sector more efficient, sustainable, and attractive to young people,” Mustapha noted.

On climate challenges, he warned of increasing risks. “Climate change is an immediate and pressing reality. From droughts to flooding, our farmers are on the frontlines,” he said.

Mustapha called for sustained investment in resilience strategies to secure the future of agriculture in the Caribbean.
