BREAKING: Minister of State, Toledo East area rep Mike Espat dies of heart attack in Belmopan

By Aaron Humes: Sources close to the family of Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Mike Espat have confirmed that he suffered a massive heart attack and died this evening.

Espat was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan where he passed on.

Espat was one of the longest-serving area representatives in the Government of Belize, first winning the Toledo East seat in 1989, again between 1998 and 2008, then from 2012 to present. He has been Minister of Agriculture, Cooperatives and other key sectors, and a long-standing champion of the Toledo District.

Espat is the second People’s United Party (PUP) parliamentarian to die in office during this term, preceded by Corozal Bay’s David “Dido” Vega who died of COVID-19 the day he was to have been sworn in.
