Crooked Tree man charged in fatal traffic collision

By Aaron Humes: Police have arrested and charged Andy Patrick Gillett, 33, of Crooked Tree, Belize District, for the crimes of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention. This follows a fatal collision early on Saturday morning that claimed the life of fisherman Richard Crawford, 56, also of Crooked Tree.

According to police as detailed by Officer Commanding Eastern Division, Assistant Commissioner Hilberto Romero, “About 6:20 a.m. on Saturday, police responded to a fatal road traffic accident at Crooked Tree Village. Upon their arrival, they saw a Mazda pickup extensively damaged and a motorcycle. Information is that Andy Gillett was driving the Mazda vehicle when he lost control and collided with a motorcycle being driven at the time by Richard Crawford. Crawford received severe injuries and was taken to the KHMH where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”

First arraignment was before Magistrate Lois Young where no plea was taken as the offenses for which he was charged are being dealt with on indictment. Gillett is represented by Orson Elrington.

There was no objection to bail and Gillett was therefore offered and met bail of $8,000 and two sureties of half that amount.
As part of conditions of his bail, Gillett is not allowed to apply for a new passport without the permission of the court (he has an expired one), nor is he to leave the country without the court’s permission. He is also to report to the Ladyville Police Station every Friday of the week.

Gillett returns to court on July 4.
