By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize is in mourning today.

Mrs. Daisy Olga Marin of Corozal Town, a woman whose life of service, leadership and enterprise carved a permanent place in the history of this nation, has passed away.

She was not simply a remarkable woman. She was a first. Mrs. Marin holds the historic distinction of being Belize’s very first female mayor, elected in the 1981 municipal elections representing the People’s United Party at a time when women in leadership positions were the exception and not the rule.

During her tenure as Mayor of Corozal Town she was instrumental in advancing the development of the community while simultaneously breaking barriers that had never been broken before in Belizean local governance. Her election at that pivotal moment in Belizean history, the same year the country achieved independence, made her story all the more powerful.

But Mrs. Marin’s contributions to Belize began long before she entered politics.

In 1964, nearly two decades before she would become mayor, she established and managed the very first auto parts store in Corozal Town. That business, born from vision and determination, was just the beginning of a career in enterprise that would see her expand into other business ventures and contribute meaningfully to the local economy of the northern district.

Her service to the community extended far beyond politics and business. Mrs. Marin served on numerous boards and committees including HelpAge Corozal and the Red Cross. She held the distinguished positions of Senior Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of the Supreme Court, roles that reflected the deep trust her community and country placed in her character and judgment.

Her outstanding contributions to civic life were formally recognized with the Order of Distinction Award, one of Belize’s most respected honours.

The People’s United Party, in a statement issued through its Office of the Secretary General, expressed deep sorrow at her passing, describing her as a trailblazer whose work helped shape not only Corozal Town but Belize’s broader civic landscape.

“The People’s United Party extends sincerest condolences to her family and humbly requests the nation to join us in mourning the loss of an outstanding Belizean,” the statement read.

Mrs. Daisy Olga Marin leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured in titles alone. She leaves it in every woman who has since stood for office in this country, in every barrier that has since been broken and in the streets and institutions of a Corozal Town that is better because she gave her life to it.

May she rest in eternal peace.
