International News: El Niño expected to bring multiple Climate risks to South-West Indian Ocean region

By Zoila Palma: The strengthening El Niño is expected to influence temperatures, rainfall and tropical cyclone patterns across the South-West Indian Ocean region from October 2026 through March 2027, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The South-West Indian Ocean Climate Outlook Forum has warned that governments and communities should prepare for multiple hazards, as impacts are expected to vary across different parts of the region.

Southern areas are expected to face drier conditions and increased risks of drought, water shortages and food insecurity, particularly in South Africa, southern and central Mozambique, Malawi and south-western Madagascar.

Meanwhile, wetter conditions are forecast for parts of the northern region, including Tanzania, northern Malawi, Seychelles and portions of the Mascarene Islands, increasing the risk of flooding, flash floods, landslides and water contamination.

The outlook also forecasts above-normal temperatures across the entire region, with a significantly higher likelihood of exceptionally high temperatures.

Madagascar is expected to experience mixed rainfall patterns, with the north and east more likely to receive normal to above-normal rainfall, while the south-west could face below-normal rainfall and drought stress. These conditions could affect agriculture, water resources, health, fisheries and marine ecosystems.

The forum also forecasts below-normal tropical cyclone activity across the South-West Indian Ocean basin overall, influenced by El Niño, with cyclone tracks expected to shift southward.
