By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A man has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault, after a retiree reported being threatened with an iron crutch outside a supermarket in Orange Walk Town, an attack stopped only when a bystander stepped in.

According to the Belize Police Department, 65-year-old Francisco Chan, a Belizean retiree of San Jose Village, reported that on Monday, July 6, 2026, at about 8:20 p.m., he was outside the 123 Supermarket on Liberty Avenue when a man walking with a pair of iron crutches approached and asked him for money.

Chan told police that when he refused, the man became aggressive and began insulting him. The man walked away, he reported, only to return about two minutes later and resume the insults. The situation then escalated. According to Chan, the man came closer, lifted one of the crutches in his right hand, and was about to strike him when another man intervened. Chan said he feared for his life, as the blow could have seriously hurt him.

A police officer working inside the supermarket was alerted, and Chan reported that when the officer emerged, the man hurried across the avenue, where he continued behaving aggressively toward other people leaving the store. Chan told police the area in front of the supermarket was brightly lit, giving him a clear view of the man, whom he said he has seen outside the establishment many times before, asking people for money.

Police detained 41-year-old Gilberto Pott, an unemployed resident of Palmetto Street, Orange Walk Town, who was cautioned, informed of his constitutional rights, and placed into custody pending charges. On Tuesday, July 7, police obtained a warrant and formally charged Pott with the crime of aggravated assault.
