By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police in Orange Walk are investigating a report of historical child sexual abuse, after a teenage girl came forward with the support of a social worker.
According to the Belize Police Department, the 15-year-old visited the Orange Walk Police Station in the company of a social worker to report that she was sexually abused as a young child, in an incident dating back to 2018, when she was eight years old. She reported that the abuse was committed by a male relative at a family residence, and that it ended when the man fled upon hearing someone return to the home.
Police recorded statements from the complainant and a relative, and a medical examination was conducted. The matter remains under investigation, and police have identified a man they are looking to speak with in connection with the report. No charges have been laid at this time.
The identities of the complainant and those connected to her are being withheld, in keeping with the protection afforded to minors and victims of sexual offences.
It takes tremendous courage for a survivor to come forward, sometimes years after the fact. Anyone who has experienced sexual abuse, no matter how long ago, is encouraged to make a report to police or to reach out to the Department of Human Services or a trusted support organization. Help is available, and no one has to face it alone.
