BEL warns of outages and possible load shedding as CFE supply falters

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is advising customers that the country is facing a generation shortfall after supply problems hit its power imports from Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE).

In a public advisory issued June 19, BEL said CFE informed the company at around 4:45 p.m. that it was experiencing supply issues, and that those issues remain ongoing.

The utility said the timing is difficult because several local generation sources are also operating with limited available capacity. As a result, some customers have already experienced power outages, and BEL warned that it may be forced to carry out additional load shedding until the situation is resolved.

Load shedding is the controlled, temporary cutting of power to parts of the grid to keep the wider system from collapsing.

BEL apologized for the inconvenience and said it is working closely with its suppliers to restore adequate generation capacity as quickly as possible. The company said further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.

Customers seeking information on outages can reach BEL’s Customer Care line toll free at 0.800.235.2273.
