By Breaking Belize News Staff: Shane Anthony John Bradley, 24, a Belize City fisherman, has been sentenced to prison for assaulting a teacher and damaging school property at Wesley College. Bradley received a six-week sentence for aggravated assault and a two-week sentence for property damage, to be served consecutively.
The incident occurred on October 30, 2024, when Bradley accompanied a mother to the school to collect a student’s report card. According to a teacher, while she was meeting with a parent and child, the mother Bradley was with made a loud remark. When it was her daughter’s turn to speak with the teacher, the mother questioned the teacher about how she had handled a previous incident involving her daughter. At this point, Bradley became boisterous and aggressive.
The teacher reported that Bradley kicked a wooden chair and threw it towards her, but it was blocked by two other people present. He then threw a double window, missing her but damaging the window, which was valued at $475. Fearing for her safety, the teacher called the police.
Bradley appeared unrepresented before a Magistrate in Court #8 and pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a wooden chair and damage to property. While he initially disputed some of the facts presented by the police, he eventually admitted to their accuracy.
In mitigation, Bradley asked for leniency and a fine, stating that he was the sole provider for his children and that they had not seen him since his detention. However, the Magistrate emphasized the seriousness of the offense, noting that teachers are now legally protected in the same way as police officers, public officers, BDF personnel, and media personnel when assaulted in the line of duty. The Magistrate also took into account Bradley’s prior conviction for violent crimes and the fact that he has three other violent crime cases pending trial at the High Court.
Despite Bradley’s plea for a fine and his claim that he was told he would receive one, the Magistrate sentenced him to imprisonment. Bradley expressed surprise and protested the sentence, stating, “I don’t want to go to jail for something I did not do.” The Magistrate explained that the prison sentence was due to his previous convictions for violent crimes. Police viewed surveillance footage from the school, which led to Bradley’s identification and subsequent arrest on December 21, 2024. Bradley, who previously worked at a call center, told the court he expected to be fired due to his absence since his detention.
