By Breaking Belize News Staff: Sigfrido Ernesto Diaz Trigueros, 34, a Salvadoran industrial engineer, avoided jail time this Christmas after an aggravated assault with a firearm charge against him was withdrawn. Trigueros was accused of pulling a licensed 9mm pistol on a bus conductor at the Michael Finnegan Market.

Trigueros spent a night in police custody before appearing unrepresented before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola in Court #1. At the start of the arraignment, the complainant, a bus conductor for Silva’s Bus Company from Benque Viejo Del Carmen, informed the court that he wished to withdraw the charge.

The victim explained that he and Trigueros had reached an agreement to settle the matter out of court, involving compensation for damage to the bus. He confirmed to the prosecutor that he was withdrawing the charge of his own free will.

Consequently, the prosecutor offered no further evidence, and the Chief Magistrate dismissed the charge against Trigueros, allowing him to go free.

According to the initial police report, the incident occurred at approximately 7:20 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 2024, near the Belize City Bus Terminal. While approaching the terminal, a red umbrella being moved by two men broke the mirror of the bus the victim was working on. After dropping off passengers, he returned to find the owner of the fruit stall responsible for the umbrella. He was then approached by Trigueros, who became aggressive. He reported that Trigueros then pulled out a black firearm resembling a 9mm pistol, pointed it at him, and said, “Go fah yah before I shot yuh.”

Police were called, and he later identified Trigueros, who was found with a licensed black Springfield Armory pistol.
