By Breaking Belize News Staff: Cameron Sheldon Myles, 19, of Ladyville, has been sentenced to two years and seven months in prison after pleading guilty to attempted robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The sentence stems from an incident on December 18, 2024, at Eric’s Supermarket on Bachelors Avenue.
Myles and another individual attempted to rob the supermarket, but their plan was thwarted when a licensed gun holder inside the store shot Myles in the left upper shoulder. Myles was treated at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) and released into police custody on Friday.
He appeared in court on Monday, facing six charges: attempted robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. Myles pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery and firearm possession charges, but not guilty to the remaining four.
During the court proceedings, Myles’s attorney, Ian Gray, presented mitigating factors, including Myles’s young age, first-time offender status, early guilty plea, and the fact that no one other than Myles was injured and no property was stolen or damaged. The Magistrate considered these factors, opting not to impose the minimum five-year sentence for attempted robbery, which could have extended to 22 years.
The Magistrate’s starting point was four and a half years, but deductions were made for the early guilty plea, first-time offender status, and other mitigating circumstances. The final sentence was two years and seven months on each count, to run concurrently.
Police recovered a rusty .38 revolver at the scene, believed to be the firearm used in the attempted robbery. Footage from inside the store also aided the police investigation. Police believe one more person was involved in the attempted robbery and are continuing their investigation. The remaining four charges against Myles have been adjourned until February 10, 2025.
