The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management is pleased to announce the awarding of the first round of grants under the Micro-Grants Scheme established through the GEF-6 Project, Integrated Management of Production Landscapes to Deliver Multiple Global Environmental Benefits.

As part of the broader Greening Belize Initiative, grants ranging from BZD $5,000 to $30,000 are being awarded to community organizations, schools, youth groups, women-led organizations, Indigenous Peoples, cooperatives, and smallholder farmers undertaking projects that promote sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and nature-based livelihoods.

Among the successful recipients is Santa Familia Roman Catholic School, which has been awarded BZD $29,081.75 to strengthen its Sustainable Agriculture Initiative. The project will enhance the school’s agricultural programme and provide students with hands-on experience in sustainable farming, environmental stewardship, and natural resource management while supporting biodiversity conservation and climate resilience within the community.

The Micro-Grants Scheme reflects the Government of Belize’s commitment to empowering communities to play a leading role in environmental management and sustainable development. By supporting locally driven solutions, the programme is helping to build stronger, more resilient communities while delivering measurable environmental benefits across the Belize River Watershed.

“The Micro-Grants Scheme demonstrates the power of community-driven action in addressing environmental challenges,” said Hon. Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management. “These investments are empowering Belizeans to become environmental champions while contributing to the sustainable management of our natural resources for future generations.”

The Ministry will continue to highlight grant recipients and project achievements as implementation progresses, showcasing how local leadership and innovation are helping to advance the goals of the Greening Belize Initiative and create lasting benefits for people, communities, and the environment.
