By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s young karate standout Xavier Vivas delivered a brilliant performance at the 31st Central American Karate Championships 2026, earning the silver medal in the U12, -40kg Male Kumite division and adding to a strong showing by the Belize Karate Federation’s youth delegation.

Vivas, a student of Ebenezer Methodist Primary School in Belize City, fought with discipline, speed, and composure throughout the tournament. His run to the final displayed his growing maturity in competition.

His silver medal was one of two podium finishes for Belize in Managua. His teammate Julie Cruz, competing in Cadet Female -54kg Kumite, secured a bronze medal after an impressive campaign that included victories over athletes from Mexico and El Salvador before falling to Venezuela in the semifinals. The third member of the delegation, Kasyah Dunn of St. Ann Anglican Primary School, also represented Belize with pride in a highly competitive field.

The Belize Karate Federation (BKF) expressed pride in the athletes’ performances and extended special appreciation to the schools supporting their development: St. Ann Anglican Primary School, Ebenezer Methodist Primary School, and Cayo Christian Academy. The BKF noted that the schools’ willingness to facilitate the students’ participation reflects a strong commitment to balancing academics, discipline, and sporting excellence.

“Representing Belize at the regional level is a significant achievement and an invaluable learning experience for these young athletes,” the BKF said.

“Your institutions’ support plays a vital role in making these opportunities possible. We respectfully ask for your continued understanding in facilitating these students as they catch up on any missed assignments, coursework, or examinations during their absence while representing our country. On behalf of the Belize Karate Federation, we thank you for helping to nurture not only excellent students, but also proud ambassadors for Belize through sport.”

Vivas returns home as a Central American silver medalist, marking another achievement in Belize’s growing presence in regional karate.
