By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City mechanic who admitted to assaulting his girlfriend during a domestic dispute was fined in court on Friday after pleading guilty to the offense.

Denfield Edwin Davis, 28, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Jana Pechcoo in Court #2, where he pleaded guilty to a charge of harm against his common-law wife.

In court, Davis admitted he was wrong and expressed remorse, stating that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding fueled by accusations of infidelity. He also told the court he had been under stress and was intoxicated at the time. The Magistrate reminded him that being drunk is not a legal defense.

Davis indicated that he believed his partner would attend court to withdraw the charge, but despite her presence, the prosecution did not allow the matter to be dropped, reflecting the court’s firm stance amid rising domestic violence cases.

The court heard that on April 8, 2026, Davis’s common-law wife reported to the Gender Violence Response Investigation Unit that Davis assaulted her at their home. She stated that during an argument, Davis punched her to the head, kicked her, and bit her face and finger during a struggle.

After accepting his guilty plea, the Magistrate fined Davis $1,500 plus $5 in court costs. He was given until June 19, 2026, to pay the fine, in default of which he will serve seven months imprisonment.

Davis, a first-time offender, avoided jail time but was warned about his actions.
