By Breaking Belize News Staff: An American tourist was fined $1,500 in court after being caught attempting to smuggle cannabis into Belize through the Philip Goldson International Airport.

Thirty-five-year-old Gia Fields, a ramp agent from the Bronx, New York, arrived in Belize on Thursday, April 23, 2026, aboard a Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta, Georgia. Upon arrival, her behavior drew suspicion during a routine customs inspection.

A customs officer reported detecting a strong odor of cannabis while Fields was in the customs line. A subsequent search conducted by police uncovered a green plastic container concealed in her bosom and three additional packages hidden in her pelvic area. The substance was later confirmed to be 52 grams of cannabis.

Fields was detained and escorted to the Ladyville Police Station, where the drugs were weighed in her presence. She was later charged with importation of a controlled drug and appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #7.

In court, Fields pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and apologized for her actions, stating that she had wrongly assumed it was acceptable because she is a smoker.

The Senior Magistrate noted that the offense carries serious penalties, with a starting point of $3,000. However, Fields received a one-third discount for her early guilty plea, reducing the fine by $1,000. An additional $500 was deducted due to mitigating factors, including her apparent remorse.

She was ultimately ordered to pay a fine of $1,500 forthwith, given her status as a non-Belizean.

The court noted that the offense of importation of a controlled drug carries penalties similar to drug trafficking, which can include fines up to $10,000 and imprisonment for up to three years. Fields, a first-time offender, was considered fortunate to avoid a harsher penalty.
