World Oceans Day 2024: “Awaken New Depths” for Ocean Conservation

This year’s World Oceans Day theme is “Awaken New Depths”.

The focus is on galvanizing efforts to ensure the health and well-being of the world’s oceans.

The ocean, covering over 70% of the planet’s surface, acts as the Earth’s lungs, producing at least 50% of its oxygen.

Moreover, it supports an array of biodiversity and serves as a primary source of food and livelihood for over a billion people worldwide.

Additionally, ocean-based industries employ an estimated 40 million individuals, underlining its economic significance.

However, despite its importance, the ocean is facing unprecedented challenges.

With 90% of large fish populations depleted and half of the world’s coral reefs destroyed, human activities are outpacing the ocean’s ability to replenish itself.

The U.N. urged that urgent action is needed to restore the ocean’s vitality and ensure its sustainability.

“Awaken New Depths” underscores the need for a paradigm shift in humanity’s relationship with the ocean.

Decision-makers, indigenous leaders, scientists, private sector executives, civil society, celebrities, and youth activists are urged to come together to drive meaningful change.
